Essential Oils: Recipes for stress reduction and sleep

· · · Comments

You may recall the saying "You are only as good as the foods you eat". I challenge myself by taking it a step further. I strongly believe you are only as vibrant as to how you nourish your body. We challenge our bodies every day to keep up with our ever-demanding schedules. It can get tricky, I get it! I have been in a state of uncertainty with my own health - constantly wondering why I felt depleted, uncertain about what is  going on with my body and why I can never seem to get in front of my own health?

As my research deepened, I realized the level of nourishment our bodies need to flourish is not just from foods. It can be more beneficial for us to monitor our stress levels than to put considerable amounts of pressure on ourselves to eat perfectly. As a Certified Holistic Health Coach and Certified Aromatherapist, I truly have come to love and respect my body by fueling it. Respecting our bodies from a whole person approach with nourishing ingredients is essential: from foods, to aromatherapy products, to detoxifying our homes for our loved ones, to managing our stress levels.

Since monitoring stress levels can be more beneficial than food from time to time, I thought we could focus on some essential oil recipes to help support our stress levels, anxiousness, assist with a restful night of sleep and calming to all in our household.

Let's lay out a little foundation so we can both resonate with the choices of oils I have made. Resonating with the oils is incredibly important. This helps bring a deeper understanding of how the oils can impact your well-being versus just enjoying the smell. NOTE: The only time resonating with the oils should not be of high importance is when one is sick. When experiencing feelings of anxiousness and stress the oils I tend to focus on are roots, wood, flowers and fruits. These four types of oils are essential when looking to find emotional balance in life.

  • Roots: Support feelings of calmness, stability and connectedness. Just as roots anchor the plant to the soil, these oils bring grounding support and help us absorb what our body needs in that given moment. (Vetiver and Ginger)
  • Wood: Provides feelings of balance and brings core encouragement to our center. It also brings direction of what your body wants and needs to feel strength and supported.  (Sandalwood and Atlas Cedarwood)
  • Flowers: Represent love, forgiveness and soothing feelings to the heart and mind. They let our heart feel open to connect with our feelings. (Lavender and Ylang Ylang)
  • Fruits: Uplifting and cleansing effect, food for emotional cleansing and bringing clean energy to any setting. Fruits promote self-expression, creativity and cleansing of the mind. (Lime and Sweet Orange)

There are multiple ways to enjoy essential oils, the recipes here are intended for use in essential oil rollers. When using these recipes on your body please be mindful  to always include a carrier oil (I like jojoba) and abide by any safety tips that should follow, as well as keeping safe proportions in mind. A fun aromatherapist trick I like to do before blending oils is to open the desired bottles and smell them closely together, as one unit. This will let you get a feel for how you resonate with the oils as well as let your creativity shine. Fun fact: there are three ways oils are categorized: Top note (fruits), middle note (any floral) and a base note (woods and resins). When blending or diffusing it's ideal to get an oil from each category or at least a mix of two. When you can do so, the oils are used to their fullest potential.

Essential oils can be an effective, supportive tool for managing stress, anxiousness, calming the mind and ensuring a restful nights sleep. The best thing to remember when enjoying essential oils is, consistency is key. We need to be consistent with our usage to really use them to their utmost potential. Be informed about which companies you purchase from as well as safety concerns involved with this powerful addition to your health care regimen.  Above all, always consult with a healthcare provider for instruction on how you should safely use them. Happy blending to all of you!

Much Love,
